An exploratory approach to understanding income-related inequalities in drinking behaviour
Hwang Jong-Nam

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess income-related inequalities in drinking behaviours among Korean adults over the past 10 years.

Methods: For this study, data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) wave 4(2007-2009) and wave 7(2016-2018) were used, and a total number of 16,851 and 17,480 in each wave were included in the analytic models. To measure income-related inequalities, Concentration Index(CI) was calculated for monthly drinking and high-risk drinking behaviours.

Results: Income-related inequalities in monthly and high-risk drinking behaviours exist, suggesting that alcohol consumption was concentrated in individuals with higher income. In addition, the results from age-sex stratified analyses indicated pro-rich inequalities in women aged 35-64, men aged 35-64 and aged 65 & older. With respect to high-risk drinking, pro-poor inequalities in women aged 35-64 and aged 65 & older were observed.

Conclusions: These findings suggest a need for policy development to regulate physical availability of alcohol products. Thus, age-sex specific alcohol policy interventions are recommended to reduce income-related inequality and harmful alcohol use.
